Salaam Festival Double Bill: Rokia Koné + Pankisi Ensemble
Sunday 27 October 2024, doors 6.30pm
RNCM Concert Hall
Join us for the Festival’s grand finale, featuring the powerful voices of the Pankisi Ensemble and Rokia Koné. Experience the ephemeral Sufi chants from the heart of Chechnya, paired with the deep, bluesy tones of the Malian griot tradition. This unforgettable and intimate performance will conclude our music and festival programme.
Pankisi Ensemble
The Pankisi Ensemble is dedicated to preserving and developing the lesser-known vocal and instrumental traditions of Chechen music, which are rarely heard outside their community. Their repertoire includes epic legends like “Illi,” Sufi religious chants, and even traditional love songs.
Rokia Koné
Rokia Koné is one of Mali’s most beloved artists and a member of the supergroup Les Amazones d’Afrique. Her debut album, created in collaboration with producer Jacknife Lee (known for his work with U2 and Taylor Swift), earned her widespread acclaim. Her music is deeply rooted in the rich tradition of griot storytelling, drawing from her ancestral heritage. She performs alongside guitar virtuoso Salif Koné and master percussionist Yahael Camara.
Also featuring
Faris Ishaq is a Palestinian nay master, percussionist, and composer. He charts unexplored territories with the nay, an ancient Middle Eastern flute dating back to 5000 B.C. Rooted in his Palestinian heritage and passion for the nay, Faris celebrates its cultural legacy in today’s modern musical landscape.
